HOW TO MAKE SUGAR SCRUB
Sugar scrubs are a sweet way to exfoliate and hydrate your skin, leaving it soft and glowing. Plus, they’re a cinch to make with stuff you probably already have! Note: This recipe makes approximately 10 oz.
What You’ll Need:
- Sugar: 1 cup of granulated white or brown sugar (white’s gentler, brown’s a bit coarser—your call). While making the scrub for this tutorial, I was torn between using organic turbanado sugar or the finer, white granulated sugar; since I was going to use pink colorant, I chose the white.
- Carrier Oil: ½ cup of a neutral oil, like jojoba oil, fractionated coconut oil, sweet almond oil or rosehip oil, whatever’s in your stash).
- Essential Oils (optional): 10-20 drops for scent—lavender, peppermint, or eucalyptus could work since you’ve got those on hand. Fragrance oils can be used as well, just double check to make sure the fragrance oil is cosmetic-grade. For this scrub, I used Japanese Cherry Blossom essential oil.
- Colorants (optional): A pinch of natural colorant like beetroot powder, or mica powder for a vibrant shimmer. Beetroot gives a subtle pinkish hue; mica’s great for bold, sparkly shades—mix ⅛ tsp into the oil first, adjust to your liking, but don’t overdo it or it might stain skin.
- Mixing bowl and spoon or spatula: Nothing fancy, just something to stir it all up.
- Jar: A pint-sized glass jar, or several smaller jars to hold up to 10 oz of sugar scrub.

Steps:
- Mix the Base: Dump your sugar into a bowl.
- Mix colorant. If using natural colorant or mica, mix with the oil at this stage until completely dissolved in the oil. Pour in the carrier oil into the sugar, slowly, stirring as you go, until it’s a wet-sand consistency—not too runny, not too dry.
- Scent It Up: Add your essential oils, a few drops at a time, and mix well. Sniff-test it—10 drops is subtle, 20 is bold.
Check Texture: Give it a quick stir. If it’s too oily, add a bit more sugar; too dry, drizzle in more oil. You want it scoopable but not sloppy.
- Pack It: Spoon the mix into your jar and seal it up. It’s ready to use!
- Scrub Away: Scoop out a small handful, massage it onto damp skin in circular motions, then rinse off. Hello, smooth skin!

Tips:
- Store it in a cool, dry spot—it’ll last a month or two if you keep water out of it.
- Play with scents—mix lavender and peppermint for a spa vibe, or go with eucalyptus for a refreshing scrub.
