Tardigrades: The Indestructible Tiny Warriors Behind Tardquility
If I told you there’s a creature on Earth that can survive being frozen to absolute zero, boiled to 300°F, crushed under pressures six times greater than the deepest ocean, exposed to the vacuum of space, and then come back to life like it’s no big deal… you’d probably think I was writing science fiction.
But I’m not. I’m writing about tardigrades — also known as water bears or moss piglets.
These microscopic eight-legged weirdos are quite possibly the toughest animals on the planet. They’ve been around for over 600 million years, surviving all five major mass extinctions. NASA has sent them into space. They’ve been found in the Himalayas, deep-sea trenches, and inside solid ice in Antarctica.
When conditions get too harsh, tardigrades don’t just tough it out — they go full superhero. They curl up into a tiny barrel shape (called a “tun”), push almost all the water out of their bodies, and enter a state called cryptobiosis. In this state, their metabolism basically stops. They can stay like this for decades. Then, when things get better — a little drop of water, a bit of warmth — they rehydrate, pop back open, and go right back to eating algae and being adorable.
They are, in short, the ultimate survivors.
Why We Made a Candle About Them
When I was thinking about new candle concepts, I kept coming back to this idea of quiet resilience — that peaceful strength that exists even in the strangest, smallest forms. That’s how Tardquility was born.
We paired the idea of the tardigrade with a scent that feels like the forest after rain: deep moss, wet ferns, ancient oakmoss, and that unmistakable petrichor (the smell of rain on dry earth). The result is a grounding, slightly mysterious, and strangely comforting fragrance.
